National Media Museum
Selection of permanent displays at the National Museum of photography, Film & Television (now the National Media Museum) designed by Imelda Kay and the in-house team when Imelda was Head of Design at the museum before starting Studio K. The museum was refurbished in 1997-99 with the help of a £13m Lottery grant. Seven new permanent galleries and displays were developed by the in-house team on incredibly small budgets. Subjects included Animation, Advertising, News Photography, Popular Photography, the IMAX Cinema and an interactive science gallery for children. The museum’s new branding, theming, signage and cafe interior design were personally designed by Imelda.
The refurbished Museum won the following awards: European Museum of the Year Award 2001 (special commendation); Visitor Attraction of the Year Award 2001 (finalist); Visitor Attraction of the Year Award 2000 (winner); England for Excellence Award 2000 (silver); Which? Guide to Visitor Attractions 2000 (winner); Adapt Award for Excellence in Access 2000 (winner, Cinema & Museum category); White Rose Tourism Event of the Year 1999 (winner) and Design Week Award for best exhibition - awarded to Wired Worlds gallery designed by Met Studio and the museum's in-house project team.
